Please insert the word 'professional' before 'writer.' As you'll see, I've failed to do so.

By my book - to coin a phrase! - a writer is someone who who keeps himself/herself and his/her family by being paid for putting one word after the other, day in, day out.
Wordwizard would seem to come into that bracket.
Thanks for an interesting question.

I only make my living from writing...
So what does that make me?

I've made money writing and I'm not a professional writer.
I am good at writing in different fonts though.

I was always under the impression that a 'professional' was a person who had passed exams to become a tradesman - and had to re-take exams every so many years to remain in that trade.

i agree
i think that there are a lot of "proffesional callibur" writers who will probably go a lifetime un-published, or worse, published and un-noticed.
a writer has the imagines, story lines, topics and words seared in their soul and so it comes from the need to survive that we write.... lets face it, how many great writers have proceeded us dying pennyless? you have to love the craft and write for yourself, regardless of the paychecks.

As Telynor put it, it's more about the need to write than what money you make. I've said before that most of my success is because I'm a writer, even though my main earnings have been in consulting and the computer field. It's just a matter of where I can find to express what I write. ANd,as I have also said, I considered myself a professionalwriter before I ever earned any money at it.

The last sentence may sum it up, but I also add in the factor of the
need to write. I've been trying awfully hard over the last few years to write at least
something every day, even if it is just a journal entry, or an Epinion, or a letter to someone.
