I DON'T BLAME GOD FOR ANYTHING
Ascribing such a motive to me is evading the actual problem here.
The problem is the Standard Perception.
The Standard Perception is that there is a Heaven and a Hell as actual localities.
The Standard Perception is that there are criteria for entering Heaven.
These criteria exclude billions of people that have existed on this earth, including hundreds of millions of Christians.
The problem is -- is your god the type of god we really want to believe in?
The question is: are these people really going to hell? How come? A merciful god would surely give them a chance, right?
And we have Christian bloggers right here on Blogit who believe they are going to Heaven, but according to other Christian bloggers' criteria, they really aren't.
The question is, how the hell can you resolve such a thing? How can you be there and tell the rest of us that this is a kind and good god?
I have no problem with god. I have a problem with what humans say god is.

However

God does want us to go to church. (Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together.)  It is a witness to other people, and gives us fellowship together.  God can be understood.  He isn't that hard to understand.  First of all you need to stop blaming Him for everything. You don't understand His personality.  Or His great abiding Love and Mercy, and Forgiveness...all free for the asking.  But He must be given His rightful place. He is waiting till the last person has heard the Gospel, and for everyone to accept it who will, before He sends Jesus back  to earth as King of Kings, and this whole earthly realm gives way to Paradise as it was before Adam and Eve sinned.

The God of the Universe is the Keeper of the Stars, and the keeper of you and me.  We could not take our next breath without Him.  He has set up the systems of this world just for us, and He loved the world so much that He gave His only begotten Son ...that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life....

Going to heaven

No Christian has to 'think' he or she is going to heaven.  They can know it for sure. People who have gone to hell never truly accepted Jesus Christ as their savior. There are people in churches who have not accepted Jesus as Savior.  That is where the rubber meets the road.  Sitting in any church pew does not save you.  What you do about Jesus Christ, the risen Savior is the answer.

You have already answered the question...

More precisely, the way that you asked the question starts with the assumption that,if mankind have souls, then most of them will fnish up in Hell, and that there's really little hope for even most christians not to finish up there.

What you are hitting on is the justification for the "hell and brimstone" preachers - scare people into doing good deeds, with the assumption that we are all sinners and need redemption, which can only come from one source, and that that source recognises good deeds and sincere repentance.
