I seem to have failed to mention that I was rather hard-of-hearing

as a student, when it came to stuff I was not focussed on.  Hmm...Some things don't change that much over the years.  Learning style...  brain chemistry...  core belief systems...

I needed to fill in certain gaps in understanding in order to trust what else they were telling me.  They underestimated my general suspicion of 'experts.'  I wanted the 'right information,' and was not sure they had it.

I also wanted some of my own notions validated.  That was then.  Now I know that other people can't do that for me.

I'm just saying, the responsibility for any lapses in the efficiency of my education were shared by teachers and student!

Emptyhandedpainter, I think they figured if I knew some basic stuff first,

then my own seeking would be easier.  On them and on myself.  If they had said that, I'd have understood the sense of it.  But instead I got the message I was asking the wrong questions, that I didn't need that information as much as I needed what they needed for me to know.   They saw their part of the puzzle as more significant than the part I was intent on putting together.

Maybe they just didn't understand what I was asking, or why I needed that piece right then.

These teachers were just learning how to teach, while I was learning how to learn.

We all survived.

could it be
they should have answered your questions?

could it be . . .

could they not have been able to answer your questions.

address your concerns

Volaar, some of us live on the less populated outer edges of the bell...
And I'm thinking maybe you're the clapper...

You're Probably Correct...
...about the Baklava.  The really mediocre permeates the universe as does the Beer-bellied portion of the bell-shaped curve.  Normal will kill me.  It's probably fatal to others as well.

A fine collection of folks who probably really irritated their teachers!
Yes, I just had to find where to go with my questions...  as well as how to sort the answers from the chaff, so to speak.  I don't doubt that most teachers are well-intentioned, though even teachers of clear-seeing and neutrality are not above or beyond grinding axes and favoring agendas.  Yea, even doing a bit of programming about not letting anyone program you...

Ciel -
In my experience, if I didn't get an anwered that helped, I kept asking - someone else of course. I held no malice toward the teacher who didn't answer my question. I just assumed that he/she wasn't able to ascertain the level of my understanding. So Mystic is right. Just keep asking.

Mmm. Awesome.
I like that. It's like knowing your own "way" (pathway to the divine) and wanting answers on that way and being sidetracked onto someone elses way ain't going to do much good if that direction really isn't right for you.

Avant-garde, the teachers at the school I went to were still pretty
much students themselves.  It was a young organization, and learning to teach with some sensitivity takes some wisdom, which is not a common thing among the young-in-experience.

ciel
that's interesting. i'm with you, in that what you're focusing on is what is important for your stage in development. a great teacher addresses the student on his level.

When people don't answer your question
And tell you that they'll come back to it later, or that maybe it's the wrong question without giving you the right question, or telling you that you don't need to know it... It's because you've caught them off guard and they don't have the answer!
