Although it is all just mythological . . .
and really does not matter, I find this aspect, Painter's interpretation, of the Commandment to be quite interesting, and valid.

BTW, when the golden calf was created and worshipped, I believe, the Ten Commandments had not yet been delivered to the people who made it.

As for me, I worship my wife, she is the Goddess of all that is good and beautiful and worthwhile.

How God feels about other 'gods"...
If you want to know how God feels about other 'gods'...look at what happened in the book of Exodus...when the people made a god of the 'golden calf' while Moses was up on the mountain with God, getting the Ten Commandments on a tablet of stone. Read Exodus chapter 20 verses starting with verse three then continuing on...to verse 23...then read Exodus Chapters 32, 33 and 34. God says 'My people perish for lack of knowledge.' The bible is where you get the knowledge. Please read these chapters and take them into your spirit.

Interesting point, I never saw it that. But what if he said that just to let us know that he was he only one and was pissed off at us for making other gods...Just asking

Food for thought.

Painter -
Good point. And Cantey's interpretation works too, though I don't think "God" would have said either one in the way that it was captured.

another way of reading the commandment
is : I am God; nothing in your life is allowed to take preeminance over me.

Painter,

Interesting perspective you have here.  It's interesting how much gets lost in translation.  But if you really open your eyes and read that piece of scripture, it's obvious.  I like it!
