43% approval rating of Bush (the lowest of any president) and 33% approval rating of Congress, someone is seriously out of touch, or doesn't care.

To wit, The Patriot Act, which was slammed through Congress while we were all dazed and confused, and which I doubt very few people, other than the people who wrote it, have read in it's entirety. Ditto, Homeland Security. Say, another terrorist act, which Rumsfeld has assured us is "inevitable" happens, what then?

a dictator in effect, if he so chooses?
About the media: everything becomes a circus, a dog chasing its own tail, with fifty million spins and one dizzy-drunk dog.

Misdirection: your clue to quality government. The story of the day becomes: "Newsweek created a scandal by reporting the mishandling of the Koran", not "US troops mishandle Koran and create furor". This reminds me of the photographer who was fired for filming the coffins of US military arriving at Dover AFB. It's not what's happening that's the scandal, it's the 'Liberal media" that have the audacity to object and report. Pat Buchanan said last night on a news show, that even if it were true, that the Koran had been desecrated, that the media should not report it while we are at war. To me, the fact that we are in a "state of war", has a dangerous potential to declar martial law, which GW Bush has joked about, saying that it would be much easier for him if he were a dictator.
