Hello Doctor
How nice to have an MD in the house! Leaving on a jet plane eh? I hope you have an enjoyable trip. I have some questions (of course, lol) about treatments to relieve angina pain. A family member, male age 54, type 2 diabetes, C.A.D. diagnosis 2001 following a heart attack and triple bypass surgery. He has had angina off and on since, (during exercise and at rest) stress tests and two more heart cath.'s show some blockage in arteries toward the back of the heart. Two cardiologists have both stated the blockage is not life threatening and require no treatment at this time. The last cath. - 2 weeks ago, due to worsening angina (intensity and frequency) showed new blockage in one of the reconstructed arteries at 40 percent - again no treatment necessary according to the cardiologist involved. He says they wouldn't consider a stent unless it reached 75 percent. This doctor thinks that perhaps stomach troubles of some sort could be responsible for the increasing discomfort. My relative (actually a half brother) is rather upset by this - he states he knows the difference between a stomachache and angina by now and he will probably refuse to have any GI testing done. He takes a wide variety of prescription medications - Metformin, Starlix, insulin injections, Lipitor, lisinopril, tenormin, isosorbide, nitro tabs. The isosorbide and tenormin were increased in dosage recently and did seem to help with the pain somewhat, but it continues to negatively affect his quality of life. I am wondering if the oral diabetic meds. could be contributing to the angina? We his family are also checking into alternative medicine as a possibility. I have read acupuncture can be helpful in decreasing angina? Are there any other treatments you would consider effective?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely
Raye (katray)
