I learned about sexual harassment and policy from the USAF

(How to address it, not how to do it!)

I brought that to work, and my director of nurses told me not to bring it up because "It'll just cause trouble".

Oh my aching crikey!

Renigade3, it's crazy isn't it? Thank you for telling me the story. You know what I think, there is another book waiting to be written about all of this. Not by me, I need another lifetime

Hubby just told me last week of a woman in his company who
was "teased" in a sexual manner by some of her coworkers.  She didn't take it seriously, but her husband (who worked in the same office) did.  Now, hubby's company has a mandatory reporting policy, meaning that all possible incidents of harassment MUST be reported.  Well, long story short...The husband reported the incident, and the wife did not.  The men who made the comments were fire, and the woman was as well.  Why?  Because she didn't tell.  Good post.

MysticGmekeeper, that line should have been my headline shouldn't it?

Yes that is exactly what I mean, too much is made of too many things. Imagine the impact of that on that boy, the girl, society -- crazy.

"Have we lost touch with what we should scream about?"...Yes, in large part, we have. Remember a few years back the news  story about  the little blond boy with big dark rimmed glasses who was only in kindergarten and got suspended for "kissing" a little kindergarten girl on the school bus? Is innocent affection inappropriate and to be avoided? Worse yet, punished. What a fearful and cold world ..

You are absolutely right,
people are crazy.  I think it's heinous the way people enjoy to hang eachother for their faults, yet attempt to exempt themselves from the same standard of prosecution. Sick. It's why I'm a hermit.  Take care

you will make it. I know that sometimes I feel pretty overwhelmed. But It's jsut one thing at a time and get it done.

I wonder how we got to this place where we sue over hot coffee but happily skip by the homeless without even a glance as we look for the nearest Starbucks...

I don't think humanity is wired to worry too much about enormous issues - what Tsunami?  Personal issues take precedence.  In your professional life you have the right type of worry; whether you can get it all done in time, which is much better than 'how will I survive?'

Yes Ca88andra, speaking of proportion, I am the worst when it comes to my work- it is the freelance mentality of thinking there might be none tomorrow. I meant what I said about writing - it would only take five minutes and don't worry I don't want to steal the job

Some of us do keep things in proportion. We just aren't as vocal as those who don't. But maybe we lead by example... or maybe not. You do have a full schedule don't you! I hope you manage it all without overtaxing yourself.

L.E.Gant, the damage of that kind of thing even a hint of it, no matter how untrue, is irreparable. Also it varies so much from culture to culture. In some cultures a women walking alone is signalling availability, in other cultures walking down the street with a man is a no no.

ARGUS, thank you. If we make a big reaction to everything we don't know what to do when something truly big happens

Benzinha, at last you are here again. Blogit was the poorer without you.
It seems crazy when these are the things that can be fixed that they turn into such a big deal yet leave the big issues to fester.
I think it says something too about the people are brought up now in a litigation culture where everything must go through a third party. The trouble is that all the nonsense that goes through the courts clogs up the system for the important stuff.
It is a matter of what everyone can extract from the situation - money, position, power - but so much energy is squandered.

Majroj I know what you mean. ..what if this wasn't the only time? Or not the only girl? It makes such a neat archetype... I think that people can keep a record of events and place it with someone in case something happens in the future

However broad minded I may get, living in a place like India, where things are so much in the 'hush hush' scene.. I am not ready to accept that it may not be serious issue, with that hand on the knee.... ...... That's the outlook variation!!

Supposedly this makes it easier for frightened victims to get help...

Actually it fuels the "saviors" 's egos and makes for good headlines. In the real world, it doesn't work that way. Hell, if Lacey Peterson were named Maude and the family didn't share those winning photos of their pretty deceased daughter, hers would just have been one of those "little murders" (thanks you, Jules Feiffer) no one jumps in to solve in the public eye.

HOWEVER.......

People writing articles about how this sort of thing gets out of hand can be just as guilty. For instance, and I have been privy to some of the workings of two or three similar instances, what if this wasn't the only time? Or not the only girl? It makes such a neat archetype...the first and only time he touches a girl's knee in a moment of ill-advisedness (mal-mot?) they slam the portcullis on him. Hmmmmmm.

FINALLY ("finally!"), indeed, why not just tell him to "watch it" and then press on with life? Society teaches us to blow the whistle and get distraught and have a breakdown. What would French society have taught her? (Or Iraqui or Japanese?).

MayB, yup, people are just silly about things that are 'nada' and totally

ignore the huge, painful and bleeding issues around them. What a goofy planet we occupy. We appear to occupy it as observers, like reading t.v. scripts or something equally as superficial.

She should have either removed his hand with a, "PAH-leez," and walked away to forever hold her peace or she should have whacked him loudly and let it lie there, finished and forgotten. But, today it's so much more fun to spread stories and make things big and get the hen house up and feathers flying, just for the drama of it all. Silly humans.

Careers are being destroyed by people not handling things right in front of them, skipping over the next person to be notified and taking it all, instead, to the top dog, to make their small insignificant selves larger in life, I believe. Small little people do this.

As this world grows more superficial and silly, as everything is seen only as a potential news story or lawsuit, hungry people die and governments destroy their citizenry and it's just as important a story as the latest silly lawsuit being filed by another silly citizen. Somebody needs to give us all a loud whack and then we need to get back to life as it truly plays out.

We as a whole society have changed. Those things we could flap off
once now are dangerous issues. 1) People do not have good manners. 2) We have so many cultures intermingled with their own traditions. All are offended if all the others are not like them. wow!!! 3)Tolerance has become intolerable. Why? Because everyone appears to feel nothing is bad except whatever the other person is engaged in at the moment. It is crazy, ugly and mean now.

See? The Feminine Conspiracy in action!

Seriously, though, it is a major problem. In NZ,not so long ago, we had a case where a child-care centre teacher (who happens to be homosexual) was tried and jailed for molestation, supposedly in his home as well as the centre. Did the molestation happen? no, but somebody believed that it did, and that was enough to ruin his career (as well as the careers of others at the centre).

You're right: we do need to get a sense of proportion about what a pass is, and when it is intended to go somewhere.

accomplish in so short a time, a clumsy pass would be the least of your worries. Isn't is true though, how we can blow the smallest things out of proportion?
