Michael_Pilarte,

I have been asking questions and researching the question about various translations of the Bible, and I found a good book in the library called "An Introduction to the New Testament" by Raymond E. Brown, figuring that I needed to know more about who translated which versions and more about the history and context of the Bible.  Brown recommends comparing versions to derive the meaning or essence of each quotation, and that some versions are better for studying or services depending on the tone of the language.

Here are some of my notes:

The New Revised Standard Version, was translated in 1990, by National Council of Churches, it's an American organization, it's not a new translation, it's an update of the King James version. There's a Catholic edition which includes the 8 or 9 books (depending on how you count them), included in the Catholic and some Protestant bibles called the Apocrypha or Deuterocanonical.

Those books are: Tobit, Judith, I-II Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, parts of Esther and Daniel.

New American Bible, is published by a Roman Catholic organization,  originally translated in 1952-1970, (with some cooperation from Protestant scholars).  Brown calls it "uneven" in the New Testament, but better in the Old Testament.  In 1987, the New Testament was revised and improved.

New Jerusalem Bible was originally translated by the French Dominicans of Jerusalem in 1948-1954.  A revised version was published in 1985, the English translation is based on the French (if I understand that right). Brown calls it a good scholarly bible for study, many explanatory notes, but uneven language.

New International Version (the version I use, just because it was what I could get my hands on when I first started studying), was translated in 1973-78, published in New York by the New York International Bible Society, Brown's comment on it is "not as literal as the Revised Standard Bible and somewhat uneven."

Revised English Bible (or New English Bible), translated 1961-1970 by the Protestant churches of the United Kingdom, revised again in 1989, is  " the Old Testament too free and indiosyncratic but the New Testament has significant value."

Because translation is at best trying to figure the meaning of the original thought and put it into new language, reading and comparing more than one version is the only way to get at the original meaning.

The original manuscripts are written in Aramaic, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin, so every translation is an approximation.  Perhaps Islam is more consistent because the Islamic authorities tolerate less dissension and interpretation, than our western civilization, which for all it's faults, allows debate and dissent.

I didn't get any notes on the King James version, all I know is that it was translated in the 1500s for King James into English which is obsolete now.  It sounds good when reading, but words don't have the same meaning now that they did then,  like "conversation" doesn't mean a discussion between two or more people, but "way of living", so converting someone by "conversation" doesn't mean arguing or persuading but convincing by actions and behavior or example.

I hope this may help you in your own research and quest.  I do believe that Jesus is the son of God and the sole path to Him, just so you know what I believe and where I am coming from, as a believer, not just a student of theology.

Dear Metta

You have made so much sense

Michael, it doesn't matter whether Jesus was the son of God, Jesus was God, Jesus was Christ Conciousness and merged in God in that manner - does it?  God so filled a man that the man was One with God... Jesus knew God in such a manner he was able to say when asked by a disciple to reveal the Father to them, "when you see me, you see the Father"..

sometimes in our asking is our answering... sometimes in our longing, God is found... what faith you have to ask, declares something most real... I  pray you find what you are looking for.

Look at our Religion...

I believe they have found the originals of the Christian faith in the Dead Sea Scrolls..

I put a comment on your poem...that says...Please please please...Read the King James version of the Bible...Start with the book of John in the new testament...It's right after Luke.  It tells you exactly what God says about Truth.  and that we must be born again.  I believe many people have these questions.  Keep praying to God and He will show you the Real Truth!!!

God will speak to you
9And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Luke 11:9

dont give up. Be persistant! Show Him you mean buisness.

does god speak?

that's not what I logged on to comment about, but it's an interesting question.

I'll post it in God as the Universe as an Organism.  good subject.

you asked who is god?

don't ask

just be

because

god is

and that's all.

no who, or where or what or when or why or how

just is.

and is . . .

the only you can say for "is"

is that "is" just is.

so just be

and there's god.
