Bogart was an actor and then some. Harrison Ford almost made it. But you're right. Those old movies (Casablanca, among them) were first and foremost about telling a story in pictures, not pictures trying to make a story.

I've only seen Casablanca once and was too young to remember it, but
that's the city I was born in.
