It is an uphill struggle to break any conventions.

Welcome to the fray, Northern Yankee!

Nicely done, a good effort. However . . .

I understand that blacks, rather than feeling a sense of deja-vu, are resentful of gay marriage being hyped as a civil rights issue. Not being there myself, I can only speculate on why they would feel that. But my sense is that blacks in general do not consider same-sex marriage to be a civil rights issue in the first place (and it isn’t), and that they view the co-opting of the legacy of the civil rights movement by same-sex marriage advocates as an insult to the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for civil rights.

On the latter point: Given the enormous sacrifices and suffering of those who won the battle for civil rights, it is cheap and trite for gays and lesbians to complain about how they’ve “suffered” for the “right” of marriage. I’m sorry, but they need to ask the ghosts of Medgar Evers and the Reverend Dr. King, among so many others, what suffering really is.

Also, there is a strong Chrisitan community among blacks, and I would be greatly surprised if its members did not by and large take a very strong stance against homosexuality (the act, as opposed to the people). I would also be astonished if they did not consider marriage, as it is by definition, to be solely a union between man and woman.

Very well stated NorthernYankee

I am glad you have joined Blogit. Welcome!

I find it odd that fundamentalists bemoan their supposed loss of religious freedom but denying rights to others is a large part of their beliefs. Not Christian at all in my opinion.

Well, you've done a lot of research and you're an excellent writer. Break
it up in smaller parts to make it easier for your readers.  That's my two cents worth, since you asked in one of my blogs. Welcome!

You are right, our views are in contrast to each other, but a well written post!

Excellent post. I don't know how people can espouse freedom for all while shutting the door behind them.
