One of my underlining issue through out this blog has been that religious beliefs are pulling society part and that we need to start respecting each other's beliefs in order to grow and reach our full potential. That is unity. Not unity under one religious beliefs, but unity as a people, showing each other respect and understanding that everyone is equally correct in how they live their lives as long as they follow the basic idea of treating people as they wish to be treated.
There is no greater achievement of unity than to be able to live in such a fashion.
Do you truly believe that I do not try to promote unity in my posts here?

Lies have been in control for a long time now. Those who start up any kind of religion without solid proof that what they say is true are lying. And since all religions in the world are being led by people who have no solid proof that what they are saying is 'truth' to be true, then all religions of the world are being held together by lies.
No, there really is no proof to the idea that truth wins out in the end. It is just something we wish to believe in because it is comforting. Lies have to much power in the world and always have.

The truth will win out in the end because it always does. Lies cannot survive because they destroy themselves by their false nature. It doesn't take a sage or a hero to see the truth, just a little humility and common sense.

kooka_lives -- the sad truth is that religion of any type is the last place
mankind will find any of the answers to it's burgeoning problems. On the contrary and as you suggest, many of those problems are caused specifically by religion. The recent selection of a hard line pope for example could possibly foretell the downfal and inevitable demise of our species. Does this sound too dramatic? Not if a person can agree that human life on this planet is at an important crossroads. A point in our history where we will need complete co-operation from all peoples in conserving our resources and deterring the destruction of our habitat. Now we have a hardliner influencing 1/6th of the world's population, who is intent on polarizing religious belief even further than it is today, virtually guaranteeing non co-operation from other peoples. Then if that is not enough, that specific religion still does not allow birth control with overpopulation further exacerbating the problems. So when you ask "where does religious belief go from here?" ...one can only surmise that it will continue to carry on alienating others, splintering into factions and creating self imposed isolationism as it always has.

you are right
in saying that religious disparity and exclusivism presents a problem in that religions treat each other badly.
what is needed is to respect the others' beliefs as much asone respects one's own, which is a hard matter in that one must then begin to accept the possibility that one's beliefs are not the only path to salvation and this would raise questions and undermine the faith of the weak.

it's human nature to adhere to
individual and personal beliefs.
it started with tribal beliefs, then they coalesced into beliefs of the City-State, and there were still many, with pantheons of gods and adherents to each god's cult.
unlike previous religions, Judaism and Christianity have tried to pull together these disparate beliefs under one banner, Christianity mainly through heavy coercion; however, that so'called "unity" could not be maintained -- although through the centuries, attempts were made at such either by threat or assassination or Inquisitionary techniques.
Now, the new leader of the predominant Christian denomination sends out calls for unity --
but the disparity is there. people see differently regarding religion.
I say let them. We don't need a new Holy Empire.
That being said, I don't think, then, that any person purporting to be spokesperson for the Christian religion can present his/her viewpoints as representing Christianity as a whole, let alone as Gospel Truth.
