If we love ourselves, then we are cabable of loving others. One can be self-critical and not think as highly of ourselves as we should, but the ability to forgive one's self is important. Maybe it would help to think about it like this: God loves us, no matter what and, because He loves us, He forgives us if we ask for it. If He can forgive us, who are we not to be able to forgive ourselves. You seem like such a sensitive and warm person, I can't imagine why you can't forgive yourself. Whatever, the fact that you are capable of loving others so much is proof that you love yourself. Maybe it isn't that you can't forgive yourself so much as it is that you feel guilty for whatever reason. Just as God to forgive you and He will do so as long as you are sincere in being sorry and have no intention of repeating whatever it is that you are sorry about.

Hello RAME,
I never understand why it is said we must love ourselves. Of course, I feed me when I am hungry and want to sleep when I'm tired, but this bit about loving myself really gets me. One of my sons that truely loves me, with no reservations, feels I'm the greatest, always tells me I should love myself, but I don't. I get angry at myself for past mistakes, past bad judgements and even for little stupid things I do. (Like when I spill something.) I'm NOT judgemental with others, like I am myself. I always, always look at how they feel for what they have done, and forgive others, because I care about how it must make them feel. Somehow I have double standards. I am not a dum person. I excelled in academics, but if I didn't get all top grades, I would get very upset with me. It isn't exactly easy being unable to forgive yourself for being so human.
I enjoyed your post. I love my husband also and we don't say things to hurt each other either. I could never take any of the ones I love, for granted, because I am so blessed with so many that love me. I invite you to read my posts. jacenta
