HAPPENS ACCORDING TO LOVING OR HATEFUL ATTITUDE CHOICES MADE - ONE PERSON AT A TIME.

Talion,
I understand your position perfectly. However, no insults are hurled by me unless they are a direct challenge to an absurd and immature insult being made towards me! This Mr. Mightyholywarrior even resorted to the old "playing the dozens" routine. So I respectfully disagree with you giving him a pass!

Mightyholywarrior,

Is it me? Or did you just, through this sarcastic rant, make my point? You have been so scarred by "whitey" that you hate yourself. We Black folk have a purpose on this Planet, as does every other Race of Humanity. The "white" man seems to think he knows his and ours! We are the ones who must tell him differently! "Brother" (I don't know why I do that Brother thing at the end, it is sort of lame).

Wait! I just rememdered! That is a Black thing we do, when were are ready to kick some "Uncle Tom's Oreo", ass!

I understand your position fully. It's impossible to fully respect any idividual or their stance when they hurl insults your way. Naturally, the only logical course of action is to defend yourself, which leads to an ending cycle of trading insults, the old "crabs in a barrel" routine. In a nutshell, this is what plagues us the most. Nevermind the "us vs. them" mentality. First we have to overcome the "us vs. us."

Talion, thank you so very much for your thoughtful comment. & it was a

great piece of writing -- as is the case with all of your works.

And I believe that the deepest thing you said in your comment is that you, Glennb and I are each searching for a happy ending concerning the plight of black people. That is certainly true.

But here's the problem that I have with Glennb: I do not mind it all when someone or some group totally disagrees with the ways in which I see things and let me know. In fact, I always expect most others to disagree with me, because in a great many ways, I am in a world of my own.

However, it really turns me off when someone goes beyond merely voicing their opposition to my views -- and starts hurling such insults at me as calling me a "self-hating black," "sellout" or "white black man."

Thus, for so long as Glennb continues to throw those kinds of insults at me, he and I will never be able to form some kind of a team that would possibly benefit black society from two different perspectives.

I must admit that initially, many of your posts rubbed me wrong. Not just because I disagreed with some of your opinions (for instance, I think you overestimate the power of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and other demagogues), or that I thought your observations were wrong, but because of the setting. I didn't like the fact that you say what you say here. As a person with a proud southern upbringing, I have this thing about "airing your dirty laundry." At one time, when reading your posts, the first things that popped in my mind was, "Why in the hell would a black man discuss what's wrong with the black community to a room full of white people? What could this black man hope to accomplish by confirming the worst opinions about us?" I wondered about your motivations, your goals, and even speculated about your self-image. Similar to the impressions of you by Glennb, the portrait I painted was by no means flattering. Then I thought about it. I thought long and hard, pushing my own interpretations and knee-jerk reactions to the side. I remembered all the times when I was considered a "sell-out" because I loved to read and made good grades, all the times when I was the "Oreo" because I spoke correctly or listened to the Rolling Stones instead of the rapper of the moment, all the times I was thought to be the "Uncle Tom" because I had white friends. I remembered all the times when my "peers" attempted to ridicule and ostracize me because I didn't fit their definition of what a black person should be. From my own experience, I realized there is no one way that a group of people should be. There isn't a list of specific characteristics written in stone that completely defines what any race has to be. I knew this, but I'd somehow forgotten it. Now I can read your posts and the subjects don't bother me, even when I don't agree. Now I can read your posts and not foolishly assume there's something "wrong" with you. You and I aren't on the same page concerning a lot of subjects, but it's definitely the same book and we both desire the same happy ending. And the funny thing is, there's no doubt that Glennb does too.
