Kooka -
Great post! I agree. The only possible reason I could see for having any kind of heirarcy in church is the belief that those who have been ordained have a clearer channel to the power of "God" and supposedly are to use that to help others get clear their channels. But, it doesn't work that way in real life.

Great post, kooka, I couldn't agree with you more. To me, this movement
is the ultimate in people blindly following the leader...

The Pope's a symbol, to start with. His cardinals, archbishops and bishops are mechanisms by which he can talk to the global parish. Priests are supposed to be the focus by which the community (those at a mass) by which the community communicates with God. And the hierarchy of the Catholic Church is a structure that allows people across the globe to communicate with God.

You're partly right, though. The structure can be perverted, so that the message seems to come from the top out to the masses. And many people outside catholicism (and many within, influenced by those people) feel that the perverted structure is the only structure - just look at what you've made of it.

And, something to think about: why do so many people think Galileo was excommunicated? (he wasn't - he was forbidden to set church policy relative to the universe) ANd why do people think that the Pope is the "HEAD" of the Church (he's,as John Paul II, often put it,as have others over the years, the servant of all servants of God).

kooka_lives - if God is all powerful why does he need an intermediary?
or an interpreter?
