- Go to RELIGION IS KEEPING US FROM GROWING AS A PEOPLE
An idea from WAYYYY back...
Religion (whether Christian or otherwise) starts with the basic aim of perfecting mankind, to make each person more god-like (or Christ-like, or Bhudda-like or whatever). To do so, religion takes the stance that it can only have perfect people if the society they live in is perfect, so they spend their energy in creating the perfect community. In the meantime, the individual is always imperfect, and must always be a sinner (what this means is what the religion decides it means), and hence all effort must go into the community.
Somehow or other, the books on which religions are based suggest that the ideal community can only happen if the individuals become perfect, and that it is the individual's responsibility to reach perfection.
So, yup! religion does keep us from growing towards perfection, whatever perfection is or should be!

kooka_lives -- you've articulated one of my viewpoints admirably
It is not likely that we will ever have a society completely devoid of religious influence but the loosening of the constrictive shackles should be applauded not resisted. We can only guess at the rate our collective knowledge base has been retarded by religious influence over the centuries.

this piece is parallel to a post a wrote awhile back
I like it.
Something about man would have already struck out among the stars with his superior spacecraft and technology to populate the other planets because he would have possed the intellect to invent such technology to tame the wild and raging planets such as venus etc.
the universe is a frontier.
