Hey, Glenn, I forgot to ask . . .
Whose payroll are you on?

Good discussion! Thanks for reading and joining the fun!
Only problem is, no one has answered the question. Once again: How will liberals, who make such a big to-do over defending the poor while attacking conservatives for protecting the wealthy, reconcile that stance with opposition to a proposal for Social Security that co-opts their own agenda? Or do they simply write it off and take their lumps for being crass hypocrites?
fwmystic, read your Robin Hood again. He didn’t steal from the rich. That’s a fable. He stole from the government. Remember who he robbed? The sheriff.
Glenn, you’re sort of right. He is including a provision for inheritance of benefits. But it is only one part of the proposal. And, when you stop and think about it, inheritance is the exact opposite of “trying to take it with you.” If you take it with you, there’s nothing left to inherit.

Fwmystic,
Wrong! What Bush is proposing is called trying to take it with you. He wants to basically scrap the present System for something that turns into an inheritence. A legal nightmare waiting for a government bailout! What about handling something that needs help today? Save the economy! Leave Social Security alone!

You guys are all wrong ----
the liberals aren't against this proposal - the Republicans are. Mention the word "progressive indexing" to a conservative and he instinctively knows this is something out of communist Russia. What the president has proposed is a Robin Hood plan: cut benefits from the wealthy and the middle class and give to the poor. The opposition is coming from the Republicans, not the bleeding heart Democrats.

Amdq,

What the ....? Wealth is accumulated and passed on you cannot take it with you! Some may try but if they succeed, then all will be lost! This is not about the Strengthening, Saving, this is about a man who wants to destroy the foundation of Social Security. The working class in America! For some reason he is offended that a portion of his paycheck goes into the pot! He thinks he will never need it anyway, eventhough he will recieve his portion invested until he dies.

Social Security was set up to outlive your personal wealth. You people are too confused by the soundbite rhetoric!

all you who don't like the Bush plan..
What do you think will happen to SS in the 40 years?
Of course because Bush is rich this plan will only benefit the rich, just as all of his plans do. Why is the personal wealth of Dems/Libs never mentioned when they come up with an idea? It's the same old song.
Libs are squirming because Bush has finally caught on to what Reagan knew. Forget about the opposition in Congress, talk over them and speak to the people. Congress will follow. Brilliant.

FLIGHTPATH,
No! The Bush Plan is a government bail-out waiting to happen! It is troubling the thought of 250 million investment advisors trying to make money on Wall Street. What if they all decide to sell? Who is going to do the rest of the work? You people can't be that st.... or blind!

Writeroflight,

If you are not on George Bush's payroll you do a great impression of someone who is! The George Bush plan is simple and designed to put more money in his pocket! George Bush wants to make the Social Security System a get rich and leave an inheritance scheme. I wish he would say that and bring it into the debate. Not the smoke and mirrors of "fixin" the problem. George Bush cannot care less about the "retirement" standard of living of anybody else on the Planet!

This is the first President in my lifetime who seems to have no regard for the Country and the Planet he will leave.

The Bush Social Security Plan will help low and middle income people......

After the press conference a liberal spokesman was ready to bash, and did so, distorting  the details of the plan. Bush made the details clear including the fact that personal accounts are optional - choose to have one, or choose not to have one. Each individual makes that personal choice.

I don't think any of us can tell what it might do
To our economy or to SS if his plan takes place. It scares me.
