Lucelli, thanks for that interesting comment. I am not saying I would be sacked but I possibly would not be asked back but then sometimes being sacked is a positive experience. In a way I don't think the college would mind because they are the first to be concerned about the lack of funding.
Good suggestion. I am actually thinking of approaching some colleges/schools and offering to be a coach/mentor for them to set up their own newspapers.

Would publishing such an article really compromise your teaching position? That's a little harsh of the university if that's the case. If you want to coach writers, maybe you could become a writing coach for the school's newspaper? Depending on its size, that may be a cool way to directly help students desperate for one-on-one education and constructive feedback. (I worked for the school paper and our writing coach loved his job. Coincidentally, he had been a journalism instructor and had similar misgivings about that job).

Isn't it possible to write the article under another pseudonym, MayB?

You might want to look into coaching.  (If it's still around www.coachville.com is a good place to start.)  They work one on one with people and usually have a specialty - writing would be a good one - and charge a whole lot more than teachers.

MayB, you'll still be able to teach in the "Sylvan" commercial method... that's what you prefer, isn't it?  I'd go for pulling them "out from the flames."
