Amen!!!

Peter Jennings is a very special guy, and I hope and pray that he will be one of the ones who beats this form of cancer--one of the most difficult to fight.

Somewhere, I have a personal letter from him after I wrote to him and told him about a businessman in Pendleton, Indiana (named, of all things, Bob Wills) who collected plastic milk cartons throughout the year and would then--with the help of several people, of course--arrange them to stretch almost to the entrance of the next county.

This would take place on Christmas Eve, and each carton would have sand and a candle in it.

If you were flying over the area in a plane, it would look like a huge, glowing cross!!!

It was too late for him to get a crew together to cover the story that year, but he told me he'd put it with his human interest stories.

Sadly, that was the last year this took place, because Bob and his family were dealing with his own illness by the following Christmas:  Alzheimer's.

Pendleton has had luminarios since then, but none of them as spectacular as the display orchestrated by Bob Wills!

For two years in the late 1980s, I went to a really neat gathering in Canada called Ganaraska Writers' Colony, and this took place at Trinity College School where Peter attended as a boy--but wasn't exactly an academic star (an understatement), believe it or not.

The writers' colony was beyond-neat in its own right (also, an understatement), and I'm sorry that our wonderful founder, Ruth Clarke, didn't get another grant to keep it going.  I think it ran three years in all, and I was there during the last two.

But it was an added thrill to know that I was walking over the same grounds and through the same hallowed halls as Peter Jennings did so many years before!!!

Write On!
