I Read Somewhere...
...about this couple who had a housekeeper (who was the one who told this story out-of-school).
Anyway, the wife loved to eat and was always cutting the cheese right at the dinner table (I assume, to make room for more).
No dainty, little poofs for her--instead, cannon explosions!!!
I can't remember if the "aroma" were complimented on or not, but I would imagine that there was a very obvious one.
Everytime she let one go, she would say in this dainty voice, "Oh! Excuuuuuuuse me!"
From now on--thanks to this shared bit of trivia--I have the feeling that you're going to see Marilyn Monroe in an entirely new light!

I'm a big fan of Steve Martin, but I am sure this expression was around
before him. He certainly popularized it though.
