MerryAnne, the reason is that papers are so understaffed these days that reporters resort to shortcuts. I think it's fine to use the quotes as is. It would be better to work on the story itself.
I have seen it both sides of the fence

Well MayB
we did have two former reporters on staff - so they knew what reporters are looking for in a story - but still....

MerryAnne, yeah I have found that too. Obviously your group were consumate PR professionals to produce material that slipped so easily into the paper

Katray, I get out my scales and look for balance in the story. So often I don't find it.

Hi May

Scary times indeed. From the Gannon debacle at the White House to this. I read alot of our local news is government produced propaganda also. It makes me suspicious of even the on-line media that I've relied on in the past. How in the world do you know who to trust, where are the "real" journalists, what's the truth, how do you ferret out the spin and bias from the facts...Makes me dizzy and confused....;)

Good post!

When I worked for public affairs
we used to issue corporate news releases with the "quotes" from the CEO included. Often I would see the release reprinted in it's entirety in the newspaper and had never heard from the reporter "covering" the story.
