I'll be impatiently awaiting your return, Oh Quirky One!

You might want to get a newer version of Windows, and start using Firefox for your browser. My computer nerd friend called Internet Explorer "Internet Exploder". hehe

Quirk, I have a really simple solution for you.

I'm going to send myself an email to remember....can you get your email?  If you can, send me one.  Then I'll walk you through it.  I bet it will work, because mine was DEAD and frozen, too.  But I have to work now, so I can't write it all out here.  So write me and I'll tell you what to do.  It is most likely adware or spyware that is crashing your system out.  You can call Microsoft safety PC line for free, 24 hours a day and they can help.  (866) 727-2338.  They will take you through some steps, and I'll email you, tomorrow.  :)

Q,

People will tell you anything in the world.  If you have good hardware, you absolutely do not need a new computer.  If you feel unable to install a new operating system, or re-install your old one, take it to someone who can.  When someone tells you that you need a new computer without asking you what you currently have, they do not know what they are talking about; I can absolutely assure you of that.  If your hardware needs more RAM and/or a faster processor to handle Windows Xwhatever, that is little expense compared to a new computer.  A new, in the box, full installation of Windows Xe? package costs about $100,  Talk to a knowledgable computer service center.  Don't go to Comupuserve, Best Buy, Circuit City, or any of those dumps.  They are in the business of selling computers and will invariably tell you that you need a new one.  Aside from that, their service departments are notorious.

Go to an independent service store.  I have already recommended Data Doctors.  I have been in there, talked to the floor people and service techs, and will go there any time I need service.  I worked as a programmer for 14 years, and I can assure that most people who give you advice have almost no knowledge of even the difference between software and hardware.  They couldn't tell you what purpose a Windows swap file served if their life depended on it.

i know it might not be welcomed as a suggestion, but...

why don't you get right of this dinosaur computer and buy a new one with little paiements during a period of 9/10 months? That's what i did and i could buy a modern computer with a flat monitor, of course windows XP, agfa numeric camera and scanner for a total price of 999,00 euros. What do you think?

I am fully satisfied with my computer and it is running fast.

As long as you keep your dinosaur, you will experience some problems i guess...

Quirky,

If you have your initial system software you should be able to get back to your starting files and configurations.

Back up whatever data you need to keep to whatever you have to back up to.  If you only have a floppy disk, you need to be selective or you will be fooling with it all day.  Emails that you are saving and your eml address book are a little tricky.  You will have to figure out where they are, etc.

Re-install Windows from your start-up software.  You'll lose all kinds of stuff that you have done, esp. online updates from MS.

Copy everything you have saved back to wherever you want it.

If your hardware is still good you can get it done.  A software squank up does not necessitate a new computer.  To tell you the truth, I recommend that your find a Data Doctors and take the thing to them.  That, of course, depends on your budget.  There are Data Doctors all over, and the ones in Phoenix all seem to be competant.  They probably are more so in CA.  If you have a decent system you might even consider an upgrade to RAM, Processor, and drives  Go for the latest Windows if you can.  Start with the basics, and go by price acceptability from there.

It's still fine, it just needs to go to da Doctors.....      JJ

Mine is having similar problems (5 years old, windows ME).  I got a new mouse recently and it helped for a while, but lately it's been doing exactly like you describe.  I also have a pen/tablet wich is keeping me going for now.

I'd suggest reformatting the thing and see if that helps.  Be sure to get a good backup of any data files first.  Usually that's been good for another few months at least.  It kept my windows 95 - later upgraded to 98 machine running for nearly 10 years (until the child tried to play soccer with the hard drive...)

Until we got the computer I am typing on now -- Christmas 2004 -- we were using a Windows 98 system in a computer we had for five years...

so don't be embarrassed, because you are one among at least some who are behind the times!

Definitely time to invest in a new computer, though.

Please don't make this the Terri Schiavo of computers...

....but if you wanna keep it alive despite its condition, do the sypware and other scans listed below.  In order to do those, you gotta get software to hunt the badies down.

Windows 98....how quaint!

I agree with lisachef!
Have you done this yet? If so, try going into your main computer's "help" and type in the problem. There are also some websites you can go to that will walk you through diagnostics for free. Try a Microsoft site, too.

have you scanned your computer for
- adware
- viruses
- trojan horses

???

2 viruses and a trojan horse killed my last computer. Check if you can to see if you have any.

Hope that helps!
