You are making it clear that the religious right is more concerned with the life of the body as being important, not the life of the soul. For you it is the physical aspects of life that are priority, for me it is the spiritual aspects of life. Very strange since I am the one who does not believe in an afterlife.
The courts are not saying what is and what is not life. They are looking at the evidence and have come to the conclusion that Terri would not wish to live life in that state due to what has been presented to them. They at no point have said anything about classifying life or living. They are looking at Terri's rights and what her desires would be as far as they can gather from those that knew her.
Since she can not talk for herself, they have to look at those her she was close to to talk for her. If I was in that state I would trust my wife above anyone else to make the decision for me. I am very luck that I have a family which uses common sense and would never be as evil and cruel as Terri's parents are to keep me trapped in such a state, so I will never have to live with the fear of being tortured in such an inhuman fashion.
The courts are concerned with Terri's right above anything else and I personally feel that the decision have so far reflected what is best for her and what she would have desired.
Her parents are being selfish and not thinking about her needs. That much is very clear to me. Her husband seems to be thinking about what is best for her and all involved. He was closure and the chance to move on.

the problem, o sage one, is this
the "religious right" is not obsessed with prolonging life. It is obsessed with not letting our courts define life in terms of who can swallow and who has higher brain function. If you'd bothered to understand anything we religious nuts have written, you'd know that. But your pride is keeping you busy, building straw men to knock down. There are none so blind as those who WILL not to see.

Well said. I wish more bloggers were able to be as honest as that.
Of course the big issue is who in her family has the most rights in deciding her fate? Her husband or her parents? Putting aside all moral issues here, her husband is the one who has the most say since all the laws point to one's married partner as being the closest living relative. At that point his wishes should come first and we must take his claims as being the most likely to be true.

Hiya ...

In my professional life, in the field of medicine, I am obliged to follow the wishes of family in instances such as this. For me however, I would not want to be kept alive in the event of suffering brain death, persistent vegetative state, serious cerebral vascular accident (CVA) complications, late progressive Alzheimer’s etc. If I am at the point where I am a burden on others and cannot function reasonably well, I would certainly wish to be released from all unnatural forms of life sustaining measures to let nature take its course.

I have personally provided care for a man who was in fact a living corpse, kept alive only to appease the family. This man’s skin was sliding off; he had maggots in his flesh, oozing lesions, extreme edema and a feeding tube. This was an extremely difficult situation for me as a health care professional. What is wrong with death with dignity? He had absolutely no chance of recovery but the family insisted he be kept alive … barely.

I do believe the Terri Schiavo case is an extremely personal matter and is out of control at this point. It is truly sad because we do not know for certain what Terri’s wishes are. I think it is easy for many people to scream and point fingers but many people have not been in a situation such as this on a personal level. Fifteen years is a long time to be trapped in a bed - trapped in a body. I am torn on this issue and feel for both Terri and her loved ones.

DarrkeThoughts
If her soul is tied to her body, then I truly feel sorry for her and these fifteen years of torture her family has forced on her.

Fear
It's because people are afraid of dying.  Even though the Bible says "perfect love casts out fear", most Christians are really scared of what comes after death!  I think you are wrong, as long as they keep the body alive, Terri's soul is probably tied to it in some way.  They have to let her go if she's going to be able to move on...
