Whoa. Flashback! Flashback !
Last year similar problem with mine. I called the upon the powers of the XP. After many hours of debate, and frayed nerves, some person of knowledge came on and told me that I needed to do a factory reboot. Now listen carefully, He told me to turn the computer off. When applying power, hit the F10 or F11 key repeatedly. (Sorry, I can't recall) this will get you into the setup program. From there it will instruct you in what to do. Sometimes, the information can be saved.
Sometimes. I don't know if it will work. The downside to all this is you will probably lose everything. I wish you the best.

Symphony, Windows XP has some serious problems. Each new update
leaves my computer slower and more prone to lock up.
Reading below I'm glad you found a man...I hope he works out.

Ugh!
Hopefully they'll at least be able to save your documents, even if they can't save the computer!

Ahem speaking as a former computer professional...
what you do to fix a computer problem is...
Curse colorfully and give it a whack. Doesn't always help but it makes you feel better.
