Something about an upright food bowl that drives animals
crazy. For lent its best to give up things you won't miss...like oatmeal.

Hi MiaElla!
I didn't know rats would toilet train. Hamsters pee in a corner but I think they just let their little poops drop wherever.
Our cat Sox comes running over to supervise whenever we clean her box.
It has never failed that she is right there ready for the ecstasy of clean litter.
I hope Neep doesn't make your other fish sick. That ick growing off him can't be good. I hope he makes it.
Take care. Manboy

MiaE, I don't really know what to tell ya about the
behavior of the pet rat, sorry. I'm not too familiar with rat behavior. I can say that my rehab squirrels tend to "nest" by instinct. Maybe that's why. My squirrels all always get a bit upset when I go to clean their cages because I think they find it offensive that I'm cleaning their "nests," piles of icky mess, and especially the food they've "hidden" or "buried." I do put the hidden stuff back where I found it after cleaning the cage, though. That's all part of the rehab process.) But, maybe your rat feels that you're invading his territory and screwing up his arrangements and decor?

Great post, Mia...I really enjoyed it!!
I have three cats and a rabbit of my own, so you can imagine how crazy my household gets at times. When I was a little girl, I had a pet mouse named Charlotte. I named her after the spider from CHARLOTTE'S WEB.
I don't really have any advice about what to do with (or rather, for) Nic. I do know that some animals lie in their own waste either out of nuerosies or simply to attract a mate...As for the litter box...I'm afraid it may have been a waste of your money.
Glad to hear you're going to have another sleep over...Have a great time!! If you get a chance, check out my personals ad I posted here a few days ago...I think it'll give you a good laugh!!
I'm with you...Next time, keep the coffee!! I hope you're doing well. Have a good day. I hope you have a great weekend!! God bless.

That's a very unusual household you have!
I can't say that I have any advice, I have cats myself and so of course you know the only rats I see are...oh never mind. Just enjoy his idiosynchronicities, hehe.

Thanks! I'll have to try the towel thing. Oh, and how did you clean your rats? Someone told me to wipe them down w/ baby wipes

Hmmm...
Our rats never went for the litter box, either. Finally what I did was cut a towel in a piece to cover about a quarter of their cage. Then, they'd always go on the towel! Then, I could take it out, shake it off, and throw it in the washing machine to clean it off! They loved when I would put it back in the cage warm from the dryer!
They'd chew on it too, of course, so each piece of towel only lasted about a month or so, but it was worth it not to have them stinking of pee! I understand what you mean about people thinking you are crazy over a rat. We were REALLY crazy about our rat Stuart (who was a girl, but we got her the weekend after Kierstin saw Stuart Little...) and we cried when she died after a few years. Her baby, Helga, wasn't nearly as cool, but she died of a broken heart when her Momma died--and we were heartbroken then, too. Silly little animals climb their way into your heart before you know it...
