Had this discussion with someone about 22 a couple of years ago.
To him, a friend is someone to have a good time with , someone whose couch you can crash on, someone who expects nothing of you. Friendship does not require communtication, understanding or loyalty from him, but it does from the friend. If you are in need of comfort, he is not your friend. If you are seeking reassurance, he does not feel any urge to provide it. I think he wants to be not a friend but a playmate.
To me, with a bit more life-experience under my belt, good friendship requires those things, and a degree of closeness of spirit as a two-way street. In a friend, I would like to find a confidante, someone who understands where I'm coming from and where I'm at, who can listen to my whinging without feeling that I am asking them to fix anything. I have a lot more acquaintances than friends.
My daughter, in her 20s, has a bumpersticker that says: Friends help you move. Real Friends help you move bodies.
Possibly you are not 'disordered' but adolescent--something Time and Life will encourage you to grow out of.

For you, I'd grab that shovel. Perhaps somewhere inside of me there is the capacity to care about people.

uni,
A friend to me is someone who grabs a shovel when your wallowing in your own sh*t. . .lol....
or someone who listens or pretends to listen as I drone on about things that don't make sense, meanwhile giving me things that I like...like chocolate, coffee, and creme brulee
