As it happens, I've been doing some research in this area...
and can recommend a little book called
How the Irish Saved Civilization. Patrick was by no means the first Christian or the first missionary in Ireland. And according to a biographer I found published in Parabola ( a magazine of myth and other things), Patrick resisted returning to Ireland until he was well into his life. Seems he had unhappy associations with the place.

Thanks for the info - I'm mostly Irish, but our family has been in America for so many generations I never knew anything about St. Patrick except to wear green!

Kingmi - I have a tiny bit of Irish blood in my veins along with everything else but not enough to have an answer for your question here.
