Raven,
yes, it can be pretty bizarre. Probably even more when English is not your native language.

Ye Gods...
I think, right here folks, we have real proof of just how weird theasaurus and grammar checking really is. That you for that; I needed a good laugh.
Blessed Be.

MayB,
I understand completely. If there had been a click counter when I first came here in May, I probably would have left soon after due to the discouragement of not being read. Everyone who writes here wants to be read or they would just stick to their plain old paper journal notebook...but it takes time to build an audience of readers.

word.smith,
the printed books aren't so bad, but I agree, I have had to consult my other friend Webster many times after checking with my friend Roget.

QuirkyAlone, what's wrong with a good old book? BTW, I just spent an hour here - posted twice, got clicked once for each post and commented on 20 or so people and read many others. I responded to your comment to me BTW. Having to think in this tit for tat way about comments is not for me. I think more in terms of the energy i give and what comes back and that page view thing confirms that the energy is wasted if one person views a post. And that only means they click--it doesn't mean it is read.
I have this thing about writing--that I like to be read.

I've run into a few odd suggestions over the years, so I usually don't even mess with the computer thesarus unless I'm being really lazy! :)

The
Thesaurus does tend to have some strange entries.

That's why I keep my dictionary handy.

Hi Quirkey Fans...
And you wonder why we all love words so much!! Yes, no matter how quirkey the English language, we will all continue to savor every precious utterance.
By the way...
I'm new to Blogit. I look forward to sharing my love of words with all of you. Please view my first post and stay tuned for more to come. I intend to write about a vast majority of topics, not just mature audience-material.
I look forward to getting to know everyone.
Love, Lila

Yes, the printed versions are far superior, from what I have seen.

That's why so many crosswords have such strange clues!
Often, there are shades of meaning around a word, sometimes a whole spectrum, where a word can mean almost the opposite of what one thinks (consider "cleave" - "to adhere" at one end and "to cut apart" at the other).
Personally, I try to avoid in-built thesauri, athough the one that used to come with WordPerfect 5.2 (the best word processor ever! - it's gone downhill since) was extremely good. I use a physical one instead, but it looks like it needs replacement - it's falling apart! But I haven't found a new one (that edition is long out of print) that matches the quality of my old one (sigh).
