Outing and more
Outing has come a long way where the media is now even outing people who're not gay...for instance, Marcia Cross of Desperate Housewives.
And, as for Mary Cheney, she was not outed by John Kerry. She was actively working on her father, Dick Cheney's campaign for Vice President, the first time around as an openly lesbian daughter who was trying to reach the gay vote. Cheney even answered questions about the Federal Constitutional Amendment that his boss, George W. was pushing for even thought he didn't agree with it, and about his daughter at a question and answer session during the campaign and both John Edwards and Cheney talked about his daughter during the vice-presidential debate.
So the reaction from the Cheneys when Kerry talked about Mary Cheney was nothing more than pure political drama and probably reflects their uneasiness -- maybe even shame? -- about their daughter who worked hard on his election and re-election campaigns.
