The first generation
in the wilderness was disobedient to the Lord. They opposed God when they refused to enter Canaan (see the story of the spies.) Since they did not want to enter the promised land, God waited until the next generation would be ready to enter where their fathers refused.

Could it be that the whole generation died in the wilderness as a sacrifice to enable the next generation to settle Israel? Perhaps the years of nomadic life made them stronger (and more numerous) and better equipped to do the job.

With all the complaining and expressing of disappointment I have done in my life, I wonder if maybe I'll be lucky to see the promised land in a thousand and forty years.
