Thanks for reading! Comments on the comments:

Glenn, please provide documentation for your assertion that President Bush wants to destroy social security – him saying it in that language, not your distortions of what he did plainly say.

Fwmystic, I don’t think Sen. Frist is hedging his bets. He’s simply stating the obvious, that if meaningful reform is to take place there has to be awareness of the need for reform. Clinton saw the need, President Bush sees the need, and so does Frist. You may be right about “backlash,” far too often those who are in power are afraid to do what needs to be done if they think it’ll cost them in the opinion polls. (Clinton was a master of pandering to the polls; Social Security reform was a very rare exception.)

Painter, this attitude of always making the financially successful pay more has two sure-fire results, and neither of them means help for the less wealthy. One is the wealthy go elsewhere and take their tax dollars with them. The other is the jobs created by their wealth go away as well. I’ve lived in both California and Ohio, and both states’ economies have suffered terribly because of disproportionate taxation of the wealthy driving away jobs and stifling economic development. If you really want fairness in taxation, then the wealthy should be paying a lot less and ordinary stiffs like you, presumably, and me should be paying a lot more. Beyond that, thanks for the all-too-true image of Congress acting by doing nothing

yes congress should act

to retain social security at it is

and

to raise the income ceiling on social security taxes so the wealthy will pay at least a fairer share, even if they don't come close to a totally fair share -- and never will.

to get behinid Bush would be to betray the ordinary working person to corporate greed, just as Republicans everywhere want.

Where to begin ...
Sen. Frist says, on the one hand, that a Social Security revamp cannot be forced on the public. Then on the other hand, he says it would be morally wrong not to fix Social Security.

What he is doing is what most politicians do, talk out of both sides of their ass.

He's hedging his bets.

He can say the Republicans can't pass a bill "saving" Social Security if the Republican majority sees voter backlash in the next election. But he can also say he's going along with the president in wanting to save Social Security.

Are you really that naive?

WriterofLight,

You are being tongue in cheek right? Proposing to ensure the long-term health of an institution does not include destroying it! If Mr. Bush wants to abolish Social Security he should have the courage to say it and state his reasons. But that is not his way because he is a coward! A serial abuser of his privilege. Stop it with the love for Clinton!
