true kooka
the proof will be in the results --
but experience tells us that the results will not be anywhere near as rosy as the administration is letting on
we can take the example of the poor here in the U.S.
or anyone for that example
if people work and sacrifice for something then they will value it more
if it is handed to them on a silver platter, so to speak, then they will not know how to value it sell enough to sustain it.
if people are accustomed to a certain way of living then it will be difficult for them to become acclimated to a new way of living.
this has always been the case.
why should it be different in Iraq?
if it is, then we all will celebrate.

Once American troops are able to leave Iraq and Iraq is able to keep the peace, than I will say it all went well. Until then there is a lot to prove still. If in twenty years Iraq is really do well (Which I honestly doubt will happen if the US has pulled out before then) I will have been proven wrong. So far it does not look at all like that is going to happen. We still haven't pulled out of Korea because we know that the moment we do all hell is going ot break loose. That was well over thirty years ago that we helped them out. If we keep this pattern going in the next few decades all the countries of the world will only be peaceful because US troops are there to keep things from going crazy and the US itself will have no troops at all defending the homeland. Those countries are not truly free countries until they can function with us standing over them.
You are aware that even after those great election which were going to make everything perfect in Iraq (At least that is the impression Bush tried to give), the same problems have still been there. The one set of elections has not fixed a thing as of yet and most likely will change nothing until the people of Iraq decided they want things to change, which so far has not been shown by their actions.

Good...
...post.
And sarooster - it never stops because The War Against Terror (TWAT) is a deeply flawed plan (if it can even be called a plan) that is demonstrably causing more problems than it's solving. And kooka is right to say that one election doth not make a democracy, especially when there's troops on the streets.
It's not whinging, you know. It's facing up to stark reality.

Yes, I would agree with this post except for one thing....
Once the government gets going in Iraq the liberals will say, "Well, that's good news, but.....". Then a constitution will be written and the liberals will say, "Well, that's good news, but.....". Twenty years from now we will still be getting good news from Iraq and what do you think the liberals will be saying, "That's good news, but......"!! It never stops!!!

you are absolutely right
people only value something if they have worked and sacrificed for it.
the developing Iraqi democracy is at best a tenuous thing.

Sort of like reattaching a car door with duct tape, then taking your family for a ride at 65 mph. And then we'll just reattach the door with more duct tape when it falls off again.
