Thanks, Influence and BB.
Yes, a sad day.  I'll have to try some Lodge.  I already like Pollock in a weird sort of way.

This was an interesting mix
I remember watching the tragedy on TV, an exhibition of Jackson Pollock and reading a couple of David Lodge books - Nice Work comes to mind. He was also a professor of English

Thanks, everyone.

Mia, how nice the adults in charge helped you ease the pain.  I remember the day, too.  I was at work, and someone's mother called with the news.  Disbelief was the first thought, then the pain.

Ginnie--Me, too.  I've waited far too long to really try to get published.

Thomas, glad you liked it. Could have added a new dimension to her writing.  She was very interesting to me, too.

Goddess--I read your note about that in your blog.  So sad, and much harder when there is a personal connection.  I like the idea of Ron chasing stars all the time.

Wiley, thanks for reading.  You are a faithful friend.  I love your work, too.

The Challenger

Challenger astronaut Ron McNair was a friend of mine. We met a year before the crash. I was the editor for my college paper and our freindship grew out of an interview that turned into a very long lunch. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about the space program and he got an idea of what a writer's life is really like and all the fun he was missing "chasing stars" as he put it. I was in bed with the flu when it happened. I was watching TV and I remember thinking that there seemed to be too much smoke the I realized what had happened.

So now Ron chases stars all the time. Maybe next life time he will come back as a writer.

Sidonie Gabrielle Collete was the most fun to read about!  I wouldn't mind being locked in a room with her-could be interesting.......

I was in school the day the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded. We sat in a circle, held hands, and prayed for the loss of life. I remember I was in the thrid or fourth grade and we cried. I'm so happy we were allowed to pray in school back then, even though I didn't have a clear understanding of God, it felt like the right thing to do.
