It may not be politically correct but if there were just a few more officials like this in our prison systems then maybe there would be less crime.  I'm not saying that there would be less crime and I am not saying that he is right  Though I think about this:  The single mother that is trying to make ends met working numerous jobs to feed her kids and then I think about our prisoners that get a FREE RIDE FREE MEAL and HAVE RIGHTS they get treated better than that single mom that is trying to feed her kids, the homeless guy on the corner, or the man or woman trying to climb the corporate ladder to take care of their family.  And all of this is a the expense of us the Taxpayers.  We take care of our prisoners better than we take care of those that want to better their lives and are working to do so.

Maybe you don't know
But in addition to the lawsuits that are mentioned in another comment - this guy has been investigated for what he has done with the federal funds that AZ is given for prisons. This investigation has happened more than once. The investigations always just suddenly stop, but he has never been cleared.

Those who support this guys actions surely don't sound

like "democracy loving" citizens to me.

Is this not the U.S.A. with a constitutional amendment prohibiting "cruel and unusual punishment" or am I dreaming?...

Good post!
I agree, there needs to be a balance and perhaps this sheriff has gone a little over; however, I have felt for many years that inmates have it too damn good in prison.  What's the incentive for not doing crime, when you have everything you could ever want -- except freedom -- in a correctional facility?

While I don't believe in EVERYTHING the warden is doing,

I do believe in the key elements.  Jail should not be a fun place--or even comfortable.  Good post.

Do the crime you have to do the time

Today's inmates have it made, they get free food that as taxpayers we support.  They get the most advanced and expensive prescription medication, and GOD forbid they get a bellyache they see a doctor immediately.  Where as our healthcare cost are escalating to the point many of us especially our senior citizens can not afford the medications that they need. We ignore this and when they have left this earth we chalk it up as 'old age' or that they gave up.  They gave up only because they could not afford the medications they desparetly needed.  Our inmates do not do without anything.  An investigative report with exclusive interviews with inmates, these inmates stated that they had committed crimes so that they could go to prison because they did not have any other means of supporting themselves.  Yes, there are many inmates that have may be serving sentences for crimes they did not commit.  With that said, they would not be there if they were not in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Again, that is one of the reasons that we have a judicial system so that every man gets a fair trial.. If one is serving time for a crime they did not commit they can always appeal and get another trial.. that is one of the things that ties up our court system but hey if they really are innocent it will come out in a court of law..

Goldie

I don't think it's right that one man can bring all of the society he serves down to meanness  level of the prisoners incarcerated.

For me, I'll bet you a lot of those men served America's military too at one time, maybe in Korea or Viet Nam. Maybe that's why come of them are prisoners even.

Yeah, I know luv, I'm different I suppose.

Good blog though because you are sincere in your feelings too luv.

Just did a little research on this guy. His tent city jail is for convicted inmates, but people have been wrongly convicted in this country. And I was right about the lawsuits. This is not an official I'd be proud of!

"Although Arpaio has lowered the prison budget, his unorthodox prison management style has led to some high legal expenses. The country has been hit with hundreds of inmate-related lawsuits, and ordered to pay millions in legal damages. Recent cases include:

In January, the county settled a wrongful-death suit filed by the family of Scott Norberg for $8.5 million. He died, reportedly of asphyxiation, as he struggled with prison guards in 1996.

inmate
The inmates live in tents in a sparse environment without air conditioning

In April, a jury awarded $1.5 million to an inmate denied medical treatment for a perforated ulcer. Tim Griffin, arrested for driving with a suspended license, required several surgeries for the perforated ulcer.

Another former inmate suing Arpaio, Richard Post, a paraplegic, claims guards treated him brutally and caused spinal cord damage."

Hmm, sounds like he's violating several constitutional rights there. Yes rights, prisoners are entitled to those too; remember we supposedly live in a democracy? And I wonder, how do you feel about the fact that prisoners are held in jails while awaiting trial? Not convicted yet? Innocent until proven guilty ring a bell? Also, consider that law enforcement often make mistakes and arrest the wrong people. Is there any recourse for those who really are innocent and subject to this tyrannical treatment? Lawsuits could make him a very expensive sheriff.

Cute!

Interesting that you have such high regard for tough guy Sheriff Joe Arpaio! What does he know about duty in Iraq? Have you ever wondered what Sheriff tough guy would be doing if he didn’t have all this crime and repeat offenders to abuse? He has a history of playing loose with the right to due process in performing his duties as sheriff. Yea! We need more like him!
