UUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH....
I can sooo relate to you.. to this horrible situation.  I dont know if my computer caught a virus, but I recently had to wipe my hard drive.  Fortunately I was able to save all my documents before having to kill and resurrect my computer.   You should try to back up your files at least once a month if you have a CD burner.  Sorry to hear...Hopefully you'll be able to get back some of your stuff !

OMG, Symphony,
This just gives me chills.  I have to get better virus protection, but you said it still happened even with Norton Anti-Virus. Did your cousin have any suggestions?  But still, nothing will bring back your writing, your reading for your brother and your poetry and novel.

Symphony,

by the way, this type of operation is called Data Recovery at the Data Recovery Center of the company.

Symphony,

I asked another person about the problem of crashed hard disk. He told to check with the hard disk manufacturer. They may advise you to remove it, send it to the original hard disk manufacturer who have the manpower/expertise to extract the data for you. There is a portion of the hard disk that is Read Only protected and this is the area where data maybe be salvaged. This labor will cost money, maybe expensive; enquire with the experts first. If it matters a lot to you, this is worth the money.

Of course, you need to buy & replace a new hard disk in order for your pc to function in the meantime.

Good luck.

Ben.

I myself have computer problems where I fall off line. I think about getting it fixed vs. a new one. To fix it, I figure 400 to get a new one-not much more and I'll have all the newest technology. I'll still be slow cause I'm in the middle of nowhere. My problem is small compared to yours though. Sorry to hear about loosing such special stuff. It is just like a house fire.

Symphony
I won't tell you again what you already learned from this. However I will add another way of backing up.

I have a spare yahoo account to which I email stuff or save drafts of stuff I want to keep. I do this because then I could access it from anywhere. This is not instead of backing up but as well as. Tae a look at your old blogs. It will be amazing how much stuff you can retrieve from there

Sorry you are having computer troubles, SYMPHONY.   I have had my share of those so I know what you are going through.

Symphony,

If its very important to you, try to salvage the old hard disk. You need a pro. Get one to visit your house, let him examine your operating system etc.  Get his opinion. If necessary, he may  recover that hard disk,  so that he can copy your old data onto CDs for you. If that virus or crash isn't that fatal. You may want to buy and fix a new hard disk if he removes the old one. The pro can advice you better.

Good luck.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Ben.

Symphony,

I am sorry you had to learn the hard way, the realities of not backing up your data onto whatever form of backup is available to you, floppy, cd, zip drive, whatever...I had a computer crash about ten years ago and felt the same way...gutted is a good word...but now, guess what...I religiously back up everything that is important to me...and not only that, I have backup of my backups!

posted by Julia. on January 22, 2005 at 5:21 PM | link to this | reply

back up, back up.
anything that you don't want to lose you should always save to another source, disks a separate hard drive what ever. I know this advice come a little late and I really am sorry and can understand your feeling of lose. I'm also a computer nerd and have survived many a fatal crash for one reason or another, but I've always been able to restore all my personal data because it was copied somewhere else. I now use an external hard drive to keep all my data from both my main and laptop backed up, then I back it up to DVD disks, regularly.

I installed McAfee just after New Years

Did pretty much the same to mine.

But as a computer nerd I was able to bypass some system startup files and reconfigure pretty quickly!

I've had this happen to me as well. I had some stories on my older computer that I couldn't get back and I was in such mistery, just sick. Even now writting about it just get that washed over feeling. Since then everything single thing I write down I back up on disk. It really felt like someone had competely erased my whole life. I know there's no way to say everything will be okay, but I hope everything will be okay. Take care. ~Silly

Symp,

that has happened on occassion to our computer. Yes, we had to save whatever we needed before we restored the computer or whatever it is called to clean and get rid of the virus.

Sorry to hear that you lost all your work, but saving on a computer is not good enough. You should always print copies. It's a safe way of knowing you will not loose your work. Please remember to do that from n

I can only imagine what you are going thru.

I am sorry.  I do know how you feel.  Like you, well I may be worse sort of a computer idiot persay. My laptop caught a worm in the fall,  and wiped out my lap top.  The sad part was that  had lost over 600 pictures that I had taken while in Iraq, it hurt, it hurt alot.  Mhat hurt the most was that Ilearned that Icould have started the computer on SAVE or SAFE  mode and save the data into a disk.

You must feel terrible.  but you still got lots of work posted on blogit!

OMG!

That's horrible!  Our computer crashed a couple years ago and it taught us that we have to back EVERYTHING up.  I'm not so good about backing up what I write here, but in general, I copy everything to a disc.

Sorry you lost all of your stuff, I know it's a horrible feeling...

Glad you're safe and sound

I was worried when I hadn't heard from you.....glad to see you're safe and sound but sad to hear you've lost so much. It's happened to me too and it does make your heart ache.

After you back "up and running" with all your computer bits, maybe think about who might have the bits and pieces that are so important to you? Does you Mum have a paper copy of things you did for your brother's service?

The book is such a loss, you are such a good writer....

Hang in there Symph, we're glad you're back

Yes, I know your pain.  'tis the reason my last computer ended up in many pieces, as opposed to one complete piece.  Like you, I didn't back up any files.

Look at it as a fresh start...
