Sillysoul, I'm not sure, but I think most of them probably don't feel any guilt.

Greetings
Oh I can relate. Having my purse stolen twice and feeling sicken still by the whole thing, on more then one occasion I wonder about the minds of people who volate others. Do they ever think about what they've done? and if so how do they blance out the measure of guilt? ~Silly

It's a shame but I have had my things violated so many times that I now think of it as the norm.....

Wiley, that is a good idea...I can imagine their surprise upon seeing you...but as a woman, I wouldn't go outside to greet them, even with a crowbar in my grip.

I can't stand the idea of theft ...

Once upon a time, my father had all his work tools ($5000 bucks worth) stolen from his garage. As the theives left the garage, they used his broom to sweep away their dirty footprints. Then they decided to steal his ride too, instead of carrying all those tools. So, they rolled his truck out the driveway (manual) and enjoyed their new tools and truck. Makes me sick that people will steal from an honest, hardworking man! People that earn the things they have ..... Sorry about your situation  :(

I sure know the feeling, Quirky, having been broken in to twice in my life, but, not where I am now so I feel safe.   But, one never knows when something like that will take place.   Be safe.

You are Safe and There is God!

It is not the way of most humanity but people who do commit crimes are certain that they will gain (for kicks, hatred, mischief, financial, …) and they have an escape plan to remain undetected. Committing a crime is not a moral judgment but an overt physical act to violate a person’s space. Criminal acts against a person is not deserved by anyone and touches us all.

Our civilization is being challenged daily! I hope the physical damage you endured can be repaired and that you can continue to enjoy this life without reservations about it’s humanity.

Quirky

That is unfortunate but probably a one time thing. I live in a rural and isolated area, but I think there is less crime living like this not more. The fcat that it wasn't just your mail but others too is kind of calming luv.

There are some things you can do today that are sensible when you live as we do luv.

I have a remote sensor way down my driveway, and I have a ringer in the bedroom, so if somebody was to come in the drive or whatever in the middle of the night, I have been there to greet them with my crowbar just in case.

Usually just my being outside before they pull all the way up the drive is a shock to anyone.

Quirk,
I think switching the mailbox to your business one is a good idea. It's always an unsettling feeling when a stranger has gone through your personal stuff. When I was 20, me and my roommate had a stalker who went through our underwear drawers and would call me 5 minutes after I returned home from work telling me how hot I looked in my whatever I was wearing that day. We finally had the cops tap our phones. It was scary.

I understand why you feel violated; that can definitely be scary.  I once had my high school ring, a dress watch and about $35 cash stolen from a locker at the community college whose summer camp I work at.  Of course, I didn't lock my locker when I went to the pool -- no one ever locked their locker; such a theft had never happened to anyone at the camp before; my boss who had been there for 15 years was amazed that it happened.

To make yourself feel a bit better, though, consider that crime in rural areas, while it might be theoretically an attractive option for a crook, is statistically rare.  Your chances of actually being harmed by an intruder are very, very low; so I think your idea of taking all reasonable precautions and then just going about your life is a wise approach.  Anxiety definitely does not make a crime less likely to happen; reasonable caution such as not just opening the door for anyone who comes to it does make crime less likely.  Plus most home invaders just want to steal your stuff, not to harm you.  Losing stuff definitely sucks, as I know personally, but again, the chance of something bad actually happening to you is miniscule.

loanlady, thanks for the good advice.

You might want to check your credit report in a couple weeks. Also make sure you are getting all your regular bills. Some evil people like to steal identities and it can be a nightmare.  However, I would say that statistically speaking it was probably some bad kids looking for a little cash in an envelope. Sorry you have to deal with the worry feelings

renigade, you're right, it doesn't feel good at all.

Ca88, well...I do think people, esp. women who live alone, should always lock their doors and windows no matter where they live.

It's an odd feeling to know that someone has
touched your "stuff"--whether it be your mail, your undies, or the credit card number they pilfered and used online at a porn site.  I know how this feels...Hope it gets better.

posted by Renigade on January 20, 2005 at 6:27 PM | link to this | reply

It's never a nice feeling, but you shouldn't lock yourself away or in. If you do that - They - will have won!

Hopefully things will be okay, but I'm sure it's unsettling.

QuirkyAlone
I was burgled once while I slept. My then baby son was in the house. I lost everything to do with my work. My computer, my contacts book - both hard copy and on the computer, my credit cards, my licence, keys, my passport, my brush, my make-up, my handbag, briefcase, my notebooks, jewelery- so much. It took me so long to get it all sorted and then of course the fraudsters started using my cards and my credit-rating was affected because of all they debt they ran up. Since then I had my bag stolen twice and and lost the cards again, and a cellphone.

I was angry about it but for my own sanity I disengaged emotionally. I was not prepared to let the thieves have that power over me. This approach doesn't work for most people but I just thought "Stuff them. They are not taking me down too." It was only stuff and life has gone on.
Take care

Quirky

Whatever you do, don't listen to Mark2556. He's OFF his medications.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. It isn't possible to protect yourself completely from dangers. Use common sense, take precautions, but remember to relax and enjoy your life and your home.

Otherwise, the evil wins.

Do what I do...put a small incendiary device in the mailbox.  Sure, a few mailmen may loose their arms, but you only have to get it right once to get the bad guy.

posted by mark2556 on January 20, 2005 at 5:30 PM | link to this | reply

Word, I don't know how it happened, no one watching I guess. It's true that we can take what precautions are available, and then it's out of our hands.

Amen to that Quirky.

We can do so much and no more. We basically just have to hope bad stuff doesn't happen. How did something like that happen on a Saturday with folks at home? Maybe I should go read that post.
