I'm from a bilingual country, and so learned French
throughout gradeschool and into highschool. Thing is I had no motivation to learn it, so can't recall much. I think being immersed in a place and learning the language that way is the most ideal. Course learning before you go is probably better. ;-)

Chris, I figured that was so
after all, you Brits are our mom and dad so to speak. But Tony always seems like he is holding his nose when he appears in public with Bush. Do you see it that way?

Beachbelle, I can imagine your friend
was embarrassed to say, or sworn to secrecy.

Fw, Spanish is my favorite language.
Took 4 years in high school. Always intended to get fluent. Too bad the commune I went to wasn't in Tiajuana.

It's a shame that something which is free but adds so much isn't used to the full.
Someone I worked with met G W Bush in the oval office. I wanted to know how GWB came across but my colleague would not be drawn.

It's the same on this side of the pond. British people generally expect Europeans to speak English - all of them. It's actually quite embarrassing watching British tourists get annoyed because they can't (be bothered) to try.
