I agree SYMPHONY

This guy stepped way over the line. I will give a moment but I pretty much tell them up front, when I say I'm not interested,   I mean it.

After that I walk away, close the door , or hang up. (How long will people refer to ending a call as hanging up?)

And if it was obvious that you were a lone woman with kids, I would say his behavior bordered on predatory.

Thanks for reading me SYMPHONY.

Most salesmen
seem to be lacking in consensious. It's like the telemarketer. They call at dinner time because they figure that's when your going to be home. I'm usually not very polite for these types of interuptions, to me they are invading my privacy.

The sales people do resort to plain bullying. I would ignore or call security / police if the situation was bad.

I don't open my front door...
Seriously, unless I have to go out of it or I am expecting someone in particular I just don't answer the door at all.  If they can see me, well then they know for sure I'm not interested.  I know it seems rude but I won't be bothered or made to feel like a prisoner in my own house.  I hate door to door sales people..

Symphony,

Yeah, they do get under your skin, that one sounds really pushy.  My personal pet peeve re: door-to-door people are activists collecting for a cause.  I had one stalk me for over a year once he found where I lived and that I was in the same class as him.

The worst part is that for a single woman in the city, it's a security risk to answer the door to a stranger. I had a shouting match through the door years ago with a Greenpeace volunteer, who wouldn't say who he was, what he wanted, who he worked for or anything, just kept banging.  I told him I woulnd't open up to an unidfentified stranger, couldn't he get that? He finally went away, but open the door to a strange man? What are they thinking?

Yes, I know who God is

Hi Symphony...

Yes, my flatmate and I have this problem constantly.  The worst ones though are the religious people who bang on my door till I answer.  Then they ask me whether I know I'll go to Heaven for sure.  I know I will I tell them, but they still try to push their way in...I HATE THAT!!  Here's a trick you can try...Just tell them you're Jewish...Works for me!!  LOL

I have a peekhole, SYMPH.  I peek first.  If I don't know who they are or any special reason they should be there, I just ignore them and go about my business.   I don't care whether they know I'm there or not.

I hate when someome intrudes on my time at home. Of course, the marketers
know this is the best time to catch people at home. Klara has it right. Manners are not in big demand anymore.

"I would have waved at him like a friend opened the door and said please sit down here on the doorstep I want to change my service but I will finish my dinner", then let him rot on the stoop and never open the door again... or just said " we don't have telephone service because the aliens can hear us" then wave your arms over his head and act really agitated. Mess with the rude man's mind

posted by the-loanlady on January 11, 2005 at 10:01 AM | link to this | reply

Actually Symph,
I hardly ever answer the door. and I don't care if they can see me or not. I just don't answer. Of course it's -35C here so everytime I open the door our furnace comes on and the kids start sneezing. Even more reason not to open IMHO!

I leave my house at 7am and rarely get home from work until 7pm. So, if anyone tries to come to my door to sell anything, they're out of luck!

You should have made the sale guy be the little girl's sponsor.  He obviously needed to be shut up.
