I know...
...many came home, some continued their holiday, and a significant number (from here at least) have booked to go out specifically to help, in their own time.

Not sure how misguided this is, but it sure shows solid commitment!

Westwend
Some tourists were flown out of various places, some were grateful while others complained they weren't assisted enough (what did they expect?), some were taken in by locals and many tourists have stayed for their entire holiday or beyond to help in all manner of ways.

Just like anything in life it takes all kinds

US military has airlifted American tourists who wanted to leave. There are still missing American tourists and estimates are that some two thousand American tourists have stayed to assist in clean up operations, work in make shift hospitals, and wait for the bodies of loved ones.More American aid workers have been sent in by boats. We probably won't see the American nurse working in an orphanage with injured children on T.V. There are Americans who are permanent residents in Sri Lanka and Indonesia who don't count themselves as Americans. In some of these countries language is a barrier and cultural differences may also hinder Muslims. Television does not show the whole view- shows women begging for food from Navy helicopters. Penicillin, fresh water, rice, and blankets are being dropped in most all areas.  Without roads it is difficult to distribute aid. The drops that are being done are orchestrated with local governments. I saw a report,  erroneous, saying that the army was at a truce with Tamil Tigers. The army was not distributing drops to them at all. Politics and religion and poverty and lack of silly modern conviences that we take for granted are all entangled. No telephones no bathroom no electricity
