i believe that

there are people who will pay to read, but i have two problems with current policy.

First, that population of people who will pay only to read is small. (Smaller then the number of people who say they will pay to read.)

Second, I would like to promote my blog to the general public, but I cannot. Worse, good blogs grow virally, but my blog in Blogit is virtually shielded from that avenue of opportunity.

Readers but not Writers
I talk to people all the time about Blogit, not with any intent to recruit them or anything but since I enjoy spending time here it just comes up in conversation, and to my surprise several people have expressed an interest in being members just to read to other people's posts. Just to let you know........

Here's my .02, coincidentally, the same amount I earned my first day...

I support the notion of a Reader Only option, with a lower fee.  I know folks who might join up to read, but who don't write, and have expressed that they feel they 'd be paying for something more than they can use if they pay the same as writers.

I also wonder if  a Reader Only fee could be split more in favor of writers, on the premise that Blogit doesn't give them as much as it provides writers. I don't imagine Blogit will ever be a living for any of the writers here--  the top total amt of pay I have seen for anyone is around $100 per month, and that takes some serious devotion to writing here!

No one (with reasonable money management skills)  goes broke helping anyone else make money!

Thanks

Thanks for all the suggestions. We'll review them and see what makes sense for Blogit.

Ideas

All right. I'll braindump my ideas here, but I don't think BlogitStaff is reading this anymore:

  • I like your idea of Blogit selling advertising. In my mind, all the blogs here should be free to read, then not only Blogit, but the writers, who would still pay a membership fee, could invest personal effort to generating traffic to their blogs. I was on a math forum where the moderator mentioned that Google offered him $100/mo to put an advertisement on his site. Just a guess, but I suspect Blogit gets a lot more traffic then a math forum, so we're talking at least...$200 right there. Over time, that number could become significant and then distributed pro-rata to writers.
  • I read somewhere else in Blogit an idea about "publishing" content. I think this is a great idea since most of the content and comments on Blogit are backroom, watercooler glad-handling. Creating a "publish" button would allow writers to choose content appropriate to the venue and I suspect Blogit would, to the public, appear to be much, much more professional and, well, damnit, worth reading! (Not worth paying for, though.)
  • Aside from change it's business model to advertising, Blogit should also change its relationship with its writers. Instead of seeing us as customers, Blogit should be our agent, trying to find ways for the top writers to make money. Blogit, of course, would take it's cut (50%? may have to cut that down for more work, but more revenue) and everybody would be happy (and rich(er)).

ATTENTION: BLOGIT STAFF

Tapsel-T has informed me that she knows at least 2 persons who would be interested in joining blogit, at a reduded fee, TO READ ONLY. Wouldn't you like to tap into such a market??

void-is, thanks for your second second of the idea
You're very creative, how do we get more members (especially the Top Ten on our Hit Parade) to support the idea of a READ ONLY SUBSCRIPTION CLASS (ROSUC) here on this blog, or any other way? Any ideas?

jduwaik, thanks for seconding the idea.
As to a committee, I'm afraid I'm allergic to them; but hey we're essentially brainstorming here already. Let's see what comes out of this discussion.

hmmmm if that were to happen...
I might even consider editing my blogs and cleaning them up a bit!

i hate committees, but...

Hey,

There's a lot of creativity in this community. How about forming a committee of some Blogit members to brainstorm ideas on how we can make money? The committee could then present the best ideas to everyone and let people vote.

If not this, then something. There's no reason why Blogit shouldn't be one of the most popular blogging sites around and the writers on it making a living from their writing.

A third?
I'll third the motion. Blogit needs to advertise and become a real market.

Second

I'll second the motion to add a read-only subscription level.

Actually, here's a crazy idea: how about letting Blogit blogs be read by the general public for free and the popularity of your blog would then dictate a portion of your revenues. For example, perhaps 10% of our membership fees could be skimmed off for a Public Popularity Fund. The top 200 blogs, as determined by John Q. Public, would then receive monies from the Public Popularity Fund.

Personally, tho, I would prefer to see 20%, 50%, or even more of our fees skimmed into this fund, but it would make sense to start with a small number and see how it plays out.

Featured Blogs

Featured blogs are selected randomly from a group of the most popular blogs. The ranking required to be included is subject to change.

Blogs are selected based on their overall ranking, not by their ranking within a category, so even if your blog is popular within a category, it may not be featured.

Also, recently updated blogs are much more likely to be selected. If you have a popular blog that is not being featured, it may not have been updated recently.

Thank you for the suggestions. We're looking at ways to customize a member's reading experience.
