I think it's one of those inclusive/exclusive words (?)... ugh.. anyway, I mean being handsome is definitely part of being "beautiful", as if "beautiful" is the general sense of describing "good looking" in both man and woman. Whereas, "handsome" is the specific part of being beautiful, so one can be handsome and beautiful at the same time, but it just so that in American language the word "handsome" is associated with man, therefore, a little odd if applied to a woman. But to me, the word handsome is more associated with having manly (beautiful of course) features, so if a woman has a locked jaw (or something... hum, firm chin?) then she's "handsome".
Why isn't there a word describing female that's as exclusive to female as "handsome" to male? or maybe it's *early in the morning and I'm loosing my vocabulary.

It can work in some cases.

Maureen O'hare is "handsome" and Jesus Christ is "beautiful", but it really has nothing to do with either lacking any of the better qualities of their gender.
