It is hard, and
unfortunately, it doesn't get easier to help your children deal with losses. Sounds like he is a secure little guy, though, that trusts his parents, and that can make all the difference.
We had hamsters quite a while back, no problems. I do remember from raising parakeets, that the ones that are hand-tamed as babies are the most people friendly. Maybe there is something similar to hamsters; i.e., the way they are treated as infants. Just a thought. Good luck.
