Cynthia
I don't think the human race is intelligent enough yet to evolve past the war stage. It only takes a different tone of skin colour before someone else starts feeling insecure and unsafe.
Perhaps if we could somehow manipulate our genes so they didn't include insecurity and stupidity, maybe the need for wars would cease to be.
As for not blaming Bush and the Neo Cons for the current bloodshed spectacular, I think you'll find you're well within your right to do so, since it's his party of powerful cretins who encourage the masses to envelop insecurity and channel it into a war machine, of sorts.
As long as people are afraid, there will be wars, and Sunday services. In the mean time, good post!

Cynthia you did a very good job writing this post. I do disagree and agree with you at the same time. I would like to discuss this with you if you don't mind that I will be mostly on one side and you on another. If you feel there is no other answers then I would be wasting your time. Thanks for the post, it is very interesting.

War, and the need to get out of your mind for a while.
War is a Darwinianly favored behavior for many reasons, maybe preeminently because warlike people ("offense") are usually so much better at it than peaceful peoples ("defense") and so survive and spread out and propagate.
I like a (hypothetical) culture full of "reluctant warriors" myself; you have to serve, one way or another, and no one who hasn't experienced it (and I don't mean in the rear echelons or at home) can declare it. Full-timers at a minimum (to avoid a "warrior class"). Lots of peaceable duty (i.e., maintain the interstate, pick up trash, recover crashed cars and airplanes from dangerous areas, search and rescue, building affordable homes, staffing public health clinics).
I'm a dreamer.
