I raised Hamsters for a little bit when I was young, so I know a fair amount about them. Never gotten bit hard by one though. Several nibbles and such, but no real biting.

Be Careful...
Don't know how much experience you have with hamsters, but make sure your kids know to wash their hands if there may be any smell of food on them, human or hamster. And would probably be best to not hold it if it seems agitated.
Got bit by a hamster when I was around 12 or so, WOW, did that hurt! His teeth went clear through my thumb....something I'll never forget.
