I submit
we just don't know

We will never be secure
Terrorism is anytime, anywhere. The World Trade Center was hit the first time in Feb. 1993 they waited until Sept 11, 2001 to hit again. They are not in a hurry. I still believe we have sleeper cells in the US. Our borders security sucks, our ports are real easy targets with all those containers, and they don't need to smuggle in explosives, everything they need is right here. A female looking like a student getting on a bus in NYC with a backpack with a bomb strapped to her chest is almost impossible to stop. A suicide bomber driving a truck like a Ryder rental through the Holland Tunnel could take out many. Trains are wide open. The only thing that Homeland Security is screwing with is you and I when we fly. Just sit back and think of all the possibilities.

Again, excellent points, and we will need many more hospitals if we ignore security.

Perhaps that is possible but it is still costly and people mght prefer schools or hospitals to be funded

Good point, Beachbelle . . . .
The costs would be prohibitive using current means, excessive manpower, but I think we should develop and plan future transportation modes with automated "sniffers" and observation devices, "black-boxes" so to speak, so that we can monitor and observe each mode automatically, calling in a human observer or responder when certain chemical or visual parameters are met.

of course it could happen but these things could happen in so many different places that they probably won't happen in most places. If they plan to attack they will do it somehow, somewhere.
Would taxpayers bear huge expense for defense on the basis of a possibility?

Perhaps, Beachbelle . . . .
But a tunnel explosion during rush hour would take out more people than the twin towers in some metroplitan tunnels, and in my area, with at least four tunnels, all full to over capacity during rush hour, a concerted effort would be disasterous.  I can imagine more so in larger metropolitan areas.

It surely begs the question
that if they haven't done any of this yet, the scenario is not as bad as you think. They would seek bigger targets don't you think?
