| Foiled: 9/11 London plot By DAVID WOODING
Whitehall Editor AN al-Qaeda plot to fly planes into three skyscrapers at London’s Canary Wharf AND attack Heathrow has been foiled, it was revealed last night.
The 9/11-style blitz on Britain’s tallest buildings is among up to five Islamic terrorist atrocities stopped by security services.
According to an authoritative senior source, the terror cell intended to train as pilots so they could repeat the destruction at the World Trade Center’s Twin Towers which killed 2,800 people.
Canary Wharf is the financial heart of London’s Docklands. The tallest tower, One Canada Square, is 771ft high. An estimated 10,000 people work on its 50 floors.
Nearby are two other blocks, both 655ft and 45 storeys high. Each can accommodate around 8,000 workers.
The targeting of the towers is believed to have been planned with a SIMULTANEOUS attack on Heathrow airport.
Tony Blair came under fire last year after sending troops with tanks into Heathrow Airport to thwart the threat of a terror attack.
The PM was accused of drilling up a scare for political reasons.
But security sources say that an Islamic group had smuggled a shoulder-to-air missile launcher into West London.
They are said to have planned to bring down a packed jumbo jet laden with fuel seconds after take-off.
Last night a senior security force said: “This is not about politics. It is about hard work behind the scenes to prevent what is a clear threat to the nation.
