Horus, thanks for addressing that issue. Indeed that is how I view education, something in the model of "teach students HOW to think, not WHAT to think."

I see your point and I think I understand it.

A free thinger is not a wild thinker. Let me make an analogy: to drive a car you need to learn form someone how to it; but then once you know it well, you have to able to drive in your own style, choose your destinations, speed, people that will come with in the car. I know that this is a crude analogy, and very limited one, but it should help express the concept.

Horus

I am a freethinker.

i have always been one.

i noticed how different i was when i was a tiny child

back then i did not know i was different

because i knew no difference, but from here i can see i quite well

i am with you when you say we need more at the helm

but i do not believe that the status quo has the courage it takes to

detach itself from its comforts

maybe we can start a new nation?

a society of free thinkers?

lover, mysteria

I don't know if it's possible to be a free thinker by your standards, if your standards require complete independence of any established institution, church, government, or media. Does education count? If we built a freethinking school curriculm, for example, have we not already destroyed the concept of free thought, by building a structure of learning and expecting students to conform to its precepts and norms? I envision us trying and trying to form a more freethinking program, but the very idea of forming a program of freethinking seems to defeat the purpose, almost like anarchists forming a government (however democratic they try to make it, they will find themselves exercising authority over eachother or someone else). This is one of those ideas that seems inherently contradictory. We can encourage some degree of freedom -- critical analysis, dissent, reform -- but at some point there will always be coercion, preconceived structures and norms.
