L.E. Gent,

very good approach.

I agree, form rejection letters suck.

Had meant to reply earlier on this one....

What irks me with most of them is the ones that go: "thank you for your excellent article/synopsis/query. We read it with great interest, but unfortunately we have received a number of articles/synopses/queries on the same topic of higher quality, so we will not consider your submission at this time."

Or the ones that include generalised ciriticisms that don't have anything to do with your own article or story (especially fiction) .

In other words, form letters.

How many before giving up? Depends... I usually don't count the form letter ones, and have otherwiase had a lot and still keep trying.

Very glad to hear that.

canine, ROFL.
Consider it done. Now...where do you live?

Probably the first one would do me in, Quirky.

A whipping could help

Sadly, I would probably crumble pretty quickly. It takes a person with great self esteem to be able to handle repeated rejection.

Quirky,
Yes, usually...but sometimes I tend to be too critical, over-perfecting.  I am getting better though.

Alf,
Yes, it's one of life's biggest hurdles. You strike me as someone who's been able to jump over that hurdle, though.

Quirky...
Knowing me, if I had something I was confident enough in to submit once, I think I would be able to submit it a thousand times.  My problem is getting past my own rejection first.  Rejection of ones self is very hard to overcome.

Ca88, lol.
guess that depends upon the situation, eh?

canine,
there you go again!! Should I just come and whip that self-critical attitude out of you?

posted by Julia. on November 14, 2004 at 3:01 PM | link to this | reply

I think I could be very persistent, or is that annoying.... lol!

posted by Ca88andra on November 14, 2004 at 2:47 PM | link to this | reply

I'm not confident enough in my writing to be very persistent, but with the people here to critique and give feedback maybe someday I'll get to a point where persistence won't be a problem.

Hollee,
I would definitely agree with you that querying first is a good rule to follow.

posted by Julia. on November 14, 2004 at 1:51 PM | link to this | reply

In the past I submitted card idea 30 times before they were bought--I was

pretty damned persistent and convinced they were funny. Of course, I had already let my dad read them--and if he laughed out loud--I knew someone else would. He couldn't buy from me as I was his daughter--conflict of interest.

Since I've just now started writing magazine articles, and sold the first two I wrote--I queried first, therein lies the key--I don't know how persistent I'd be.
