Reaganesque
And the democrats picked up more popular votes in each state as well. This election had more people voting than ever before. It broke records. You need to look at how close it was to see that the liberal ideas are just as strong as the conservative ideas.
And there is not that many more Republicans than Democrats in either house, it is just they have the bare majority.
I would never call it sweep. It was a very close election, even for some of the house seats.
I honestly predict that we will see some major switches next election. The nation is fairly evenly divided right now. I have faith that Bush will do even more to show his true self and more people will see it. This will greatly hurt the Republicans for 2008. If the Democrats can get a half way decent candidate, they will have the election with little effort. Unless of course the republicans amaze us as well with half way decent candidate, but the chances of both parties doing such are next to nothing since neither party seems to be very good and finding half way decent candidates.

I have to agree with Reganesque.
The Republicans picked up seats in the House and Senate which does not bode well for the Democrats. The population shifts to the South and West are not helping the Democrats either. We will always have a two-party system no matter what, but the balance of power will swing back and forth from time to time. I see the Republicans hanging on to power for a while now. If the Democrats can break some of the hold they have on Congress this past election they will have to try a new approach to gain seats.

Oh please!
When you consider the fact that Bush, after all of this, picked up more popular votes in each state than in 2000, and the fact that we gained seats in the House and Senate, you know damn well that it was a sweep-- an unpredictable one, at that. I don't presume that this is the "end of the Democrats". They can easily mend their party. They just have to become a wee bit more sane and find a message. As I have said, no one is "over" yet. This is the cycle of American politics. But they sure as hell are wounded.

I'm quite sure the tables will turn
in four years if Bush continues to govern the way he has been. But there are signs already that he's becoming more moderate. I heard him say this morning that he supports the rights of states to legalize gay civil unions.
