I'm facing this myself, getting back out into the world, after dealing with emotional issues. For myself, I think volunteering one day a week cashiering at the local senior center thrift store might work.  It's a start, and something I can handle.  I think small steps are essential in recovery and in gaining confidence.

I'm really torn on this one, Make2.
I see this from both sides. An employer can't pick up the slack when someone is missing from work. Their business would eventually fail, and of course, it puts additional pressures on the remaining employees, as "someone" has to pick up the slack in the meantime. I'm an employer, so I understand this totally.

On the other hand, I'm the caretaker of a seriously ill individual, and have been for decades. He got more benefits by not working, obviously, in health care and the like. But now that I look back on it, I wish I had made him get a parttime job (you're right, a full time job would be out of the question), or something to give him purpose and a sense of contribution to the world. He is now "very" dependent on the system, and me, and expects everyone to put his needs first. Again, this is a tough decision, and one that I handled incorrectly myself. I enjoy your work.

make 2 short
I understand not everybody can work. Not every boss is bad either. My husband and I ran a small manufacturing business. We used many people who were together in group homes and able to work at their own speed and the pay was fair. However, I do know that my husband and I neither one had health insurance for 13 years. We have hired piece work from many who had some sort of disability, usually under the direction of a program with a group director that supplied insurance or supplemental income and medicaid. Not all businesses can pay well, profits are not always excessive, people are not always treated badly. And some workers can't understand why jobs go overseas when the small business is not making money. A business can not pick up the slack of one out of work for months and keep their job for them. This is going to have to be a cooperative effort of many together. It worked well for both us and those who worked for us during the time we did this.
