Thanks Witty-Woman

for the information.  Yes, American Christians are very different from Europeans, believing first that America is God's chosen land and its people chosen and "more" blessed than any others in the world.  Our religious mentality is frought with arrogance and fundalmentalism that Europe has long since abandoned, knowing that death comes to all and what we leave behind defines our existence--I wish the compassionate conservatives would put that idea to work and spread a little comfort and dollars around so that we can solve some of the social and political problems we face.  Wouldn't it be a different world if American Christians took the writings of the Bible and the words of Jesus to heart, where it is said "Let there be no poor among you."

Peace,

I've just read quite an interesting article, based on a survey done in 1997 by an American university, which concluded that while 55% of Americans said religion was important to them, only about 15% of Europeans said the same thing.  The writer was trying to determine why Americans are so different from the rest of the western world when it comes to religion and came to the conclusion that while Europeans accept that when they die, they will be replaced by others who will continue where they left off, the majority of Americans can't subscribe to that point of view because they cannot accept that they will be 'replaced'.  This was an American guy talking, yet he concluded that it was the American tendency to arrogance and conceit which was behind this.
